Checklist

New in Austria: your healthcare roadmap.

If you are moving to Austria, healthcare is one of the first things to organise. This checklist gives you a practical order of steps.

Important: This is orientation, not legal advice. Details depend on your residence status, job, self-employment, studies and personal situation.

1. Register your residence

The registration certificate is often the first building block for bank accounts, authorities, insurance and employer processes.

2. Clarify your employment status

Your insurance path depends on whether you are employed, self-employed, studying, job-seeking or insured through family.

3. Understand your social insurance provider

Common providers include ÖGK, SVS and BVAEB. What matters is which provider is responsible for your situation.

4. e-card and access to care

Once your social insurance is active, clarify when and how you receive your e-card.

5. Find a first doctor

Do not wait until you have a problem. Look for a general practitioner or local clinic early.

6. Understand public doctors, elective doctors and private doctors

Costs, reimbursement and availability differ. Ask before you book.

7. Check private options — but do not buy blindly

First understand your basic care. Then check whether additional coverage makes sense.
